Studio Glass Movement Studio Glass refers to the creation of glass art in a studio workshop, with the focus on the artist as the designer and maker. Another key difference to the production of glass art in factories is the sharing of technique and ideas among artists. There are many glass working techniques used in studio glass – see Glass Techniques. The Studio Glass Movement is generally considered to be the renaissance of artistic glassmaking that grew from the 1960’s. The movement started in USA, Harvey Littleton of Corning, New York, is considered to be the father of the Studio Glass Movement with the establishment of glass blowing workshops that moved the study of glass into the US education system. Dale Chihuly was one of Harvey Littleton’s early students. The Studio Glass Movement became established in New Zealand in the mid 1970’s. Tony Kuepfer set up a glass studio in Taranaki in 1974, Keith Mahy started a glass blowing studio in Northland in 1975, John Croucher and James Walker started Sunbeam Glass in Auckland, and Mel Simpson established glass facilities at the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland in the late 1970’s. The 1980’s was a strong growth period for the New Zealand Studio Glass Movement. Garry Nash and Ann Robinson became partners in Sunbeam Glass and both rose to prominence in the NZ art scene. Peter Viesnik and Peter Raos started Hot Glass Company in Devonport, national glass exhibitions kicked off, and Polytechnics across the country began offering formal education for glass art. By the 90’s the Studio Glass Movement in New Zealand had hit the mainstream, reaching recognition nationally and internationally. A variety of techniques are used during the hand forming. Lost Wax Casting A model of the object to be produced is developed in wax, then covered in plaster to produce a mold. The wax is melted out and then the cavity filled with molten glass in a kiln. Kiln-formed There are various techniques for shaping glass sheets in a kiln, including fusing glass pieces together, and slumping or forming shapes over a mold. The processes involved in heating and cooling the glass and dealing with different glass compatibility and behaviour are highly technical. Flameworked Also known as lampworking, a blow torch is used to melt and work the glass, often from glass rods or tubes. Glass beads are hand made with this technique. Neon Forming of glass tubes into shapes. Air is vacuum pumped out of the tubes and replaced with neon gas, which is excited to glow with electricity. From United Nations Resolution L84: The International Year of Glass, 2022 will underline the technological, scientific, economic, environmental, historical and artistic role of glass in our societies, emphasising the rich possibilities of developing technologies and their potential contribution to meeting the challenges of sustainable development and inclusive societies, achieving world economic recovery and building back better from the coronavirus disease (COVID‐19), bring together the threads of technology, social history and art through educational programmes and museum exhibitions. One of the focus areas for IYOG 2022 is organizing international festivals, with workshops that excite and inform the public of this rich history, and highlighting links between glass, art and culture. This is the area where GAINZ is already active with IYOG2022. New Zealand is part of Oceania - Region 16, and GAINZ is on the artistic working group, working with the ICG (International Commission on Glass) Oceania Steering Committee, which reports back to the IYOG Council and Executive Committee. It was a time marked by a period of growth and beauty alongside challenges and uncertainties, and this piece became a way to process the journey experienced in the years during his illness. I drew on the metaphorical qualities of glass as a medium: its ability to refract light and create intricate patterns mirroring the multifacted nature of human experience, its fragility speaking to life’s vulnerability and impermanence, and transformation of sand into glass under intense pressure and heat, symbolising the resiliency frequently discovered when navigating adversity. Within this piece, each tree embodies a distinct season of life, with new beginnings, opportunities and hope in spring; growth, achievement and stability in summer; transformation, inevitability of change and acceptance of life’s impermanence in autumn; and grief, introspection and solitude in winter. The white tree, representing winter, fittingly, took the longest and was the hardest to make despite its simplicity. The roots of these trees are anchored against charred driftwood, obtained from our final family holiday filled with treasured memories. The juxtaposition of glass against driftwood symbolises the passage of time anchoring each season, rooted within connections to family and loved ones. “Seasons of life” invites viewers to pause, reflect and find the beauty found in every season, and the strength found in embracing the journey in a world that is both fragile and resilient, and fleeting yet enduring. As a paediatrician, practicing medicine has at times, been all consuming. Amidst the intensity of clinical life, it is often easier to stay on the “treadmill”, than to make space for creativity. Yet it’s precisely that space, quiet, playful, spontaneous, that I have found to be the most grounding. My journey with glass first started when I came across Dale Chihuly's work in Seattle, and a chance encounter at the local glass studio in Rotorua sparked something unexpected. Working with molten glass requires the interplay of heat, gravity, and timing, often in an almost meditative way; flameworking has become a form of mindfulness and balance in the midst of managing “adulting” and medicine. Heather fell in love with glass when she took her first glass blowing class in 2007 at Crystal Forge in Omaha, USA. Learning under Ed Fennel, Heather not only learned the basics of blowing glass but was also inspired to look up other glass artists and techniques. Moving to Minnesota for college, Heather began a mentorship under David Royce at Foci, Minnesota’s Center for Glass Art, and then took a year to study abroad at Tokyo Glass Arts Institute in Tokyo, Japan. Returning to the USA in 2010, spent the next 7 years working and taking classes at the Corning Museum of Glass, New York, at Bullseye Glass, California, at Pittsburgh Glass Center and at Foci Glass, Minnesota. In each of these places Heather was able to learn different techniques— blowing, carving, casting, coldworking, flame working, fusing, murrini, neon, rolling up, sand casting and sculpting—which she has perfected and uses in her work. In 2017, Heather decided to move back to New Zealand and take over the glass studio De Flute Glass in Rotorua which has been operating as Amokura Glass ever since. Now she works as an artist, runs the studio and gallery, and teaches glass blowing classes. Many years ago a proud tyrant, called Gessler, ruled over them and made their life bitter. One day a man called William Tell rode into the village of Altdorf with his son by his side. He was reputed to be the best crossbowman in the region. Gessler set up a tall pole in the public square, with his own cap on top, and ordered every man to bow down before it. But William Tell would not do it. When Gessler heard this, he was very angry - he was afraid that other men would rebel against him. In order to show that disrespect would not be tolerated, he ordered William Tell's boy to stand in the public square with an apple on his head; and then he bade William to shoot the apple with one of his arrows. William fitted the arrow to his bow, took aim, and struck the apple right in the centre. As he was turning away, an arrow which he had hidden under his coat dropped to the ground. "Fellow!" cried Gessler, "what mean you with this second arrow?" "Tyrant!" was Tell's proud answer, "this arrow was for your heart if I had hurt my child.” Gessler was very angry and ordered his guards to take William to the prison, but William escaped and killed the evil tyrant, thus setting the country free. He became the symbol for struggle for political and individual freedom. Jo Tricker Anthropology is about the science of human beings. Jo combines her love of science and art by using the medium of glass to make sculptures about social anthropology - the origin, nature and destiny of human beings. One day, while she was picking flowers, she was abducted by Hades to the underworld. When her father, Demeter, finally got her back he asked her if she had eaten anything while she was there. Persephone admitted that she had eaten a pomegranate seed at the urging of Hades just before she left. This was a trick by Hades - anyone who ate his food was required to remain in the underworld. Because of this, Persephone was required to spend one-third of each year in the underworld as the wife of Hades, and two-thirds of the year with her mother Zeus. While Persephone is with Demeter and Zeus on Olympus the ground is fertile and the crops grow - Spring and Summer. When she returns to the underworld, the ground becomes colder and less fertile until her return - Autumn and Winter. So according to the myth, it was a one pomegranate seed that sealed Persephone’s fate as Queen of the Underworld and the ushering in of Autumn and Winter, when the seeds lie underground awaiting again the fertile warm months of Spring and Summer.
